Michal John Hoellein

1947 ~ 2021

Mike Hoellein, 73, passed away on May 18, 2021 at his home in Roy, UT. Mike began his 40+ years of patrolling in 1980 with the Heidelberg Ski Patrol of the European Division, National Ski Patrol.  While in Germany he also attained his National Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) registration in the pilot program for the area and served as Assistant Patrol Director and Treasurer for the Heidelberg Patrol, 1982-1983.  The Heidelberg Patrol recognized his service with the Outstanding Dedication Award.

 After returning stateside, Mike rostered with the Nordic Valley Patrol in 1984 until his passing, serving in a variety of roles with primary focus upon First Aid/WEC/OEC.  He was a certified American Red Cross CPR Instructor and First Aid/WEC/OEC Instructor 1985-2021, as well as Nordic Valley OEC Advisor 1987-2021.  Mike fostered the growth of patrollers seeking Senior Alpine Patroller certification as he spent countless hours in training them and was always present at the Senior tests.  In both 1986 and 1988, he was selected as the Nordic Valley Patroller of the Year.   Nordic Valley also recognized his contributions to the NSP with award of the NSP Yellow Merit Star in 1988 and 2003.  In 1990, Mike received the NSP National Appointment #7196 honoring his exceptional leadership within the Nordic Valley Patrol and the Intermountain Division (IMD).  More recently, he was selected as the 2019 IMD Southern Region Outstanding OEC Instructor and 2020 IMD Southern Region Outstanding Instructor Development Instructor. 

Mike was born May 28, 1947 in Ogden, Utah to William and Elizabeth Hansen Hoellein. After high school graduation he attended Utah State University.  Mike spent his life in the outdoors, hunting, fishing and ATVing in the Wasatch Mountains.  Ski patrolling was a family affair, with Mike and Karen (wife) in it for the long haul.  They both shared an interest in OEC instructing and Karen also served 14 years as Registration Coordinator for the IMD.  Upon her passing, Mike graciously pick up the ball and carried on as Registration Coordinator for the IMD for 7 more years.  The IMD recognized Mike’s generosity and extraordinary contributions with a Yellow Merit Star in 2018.

 Mike is survived by his children, Christine (Brian) Earley, John (Mindi) Hoellein, Kara (Shane) Teuscher, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and three brothers, William (Diane) Hoellein, Steve (Kathy) Hoellein and Stan (Kay) Hoellein. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one brother, James.
